Chapter 11

Keith felt trapped by the traffic. Northern Virginia had a way of keeping I 95 travelers hostage. There was only one way to enter or leave the state. Construction projects and a Sunday drivers made the trip maddening.

"This traffic is brutal. Richmond isn't like this on its worst day." Keith complained. He envisioned having a large truck that would everything out of the way. Right now, he just wanted and needed to be in control.

Tenisha didn't feel much like talking to her husband. "Do you mind if I turn on the radio? Maybe they will give a traffic report."

"Go ahead. It's too quiet in here anyway."

The local R&B station played gospel music on Sunday mornings. The sounds of music coming from Hezekiah Walker, Karen Clarke Sheard and Mary Mary eased the mood in the car. The few hours they had been out of Richmond felt like another lifetime. The music was normal and for few moments, everything felt alright.

"Breaking News out of the capital city of Richmond. There has been a robbery and shooting in a local church. One person, a trustee of the church had been confirmed killed. Several other deacons have been injured. "

Keith looked to find the nearest exit sign off of the highway. This was it. They didn't escape Virginia in time.

"Richmond police have one suspect in custody. A Richmond native, an African American man, Riley Martin has been charged with several charges including robbery, second degree murder, illegal possession of a gun, and use of a gun in during a felony robbery. More charges are expected. "

Keith and Tenisha turned their heads towards each other. Did they both hear what they thought they heard?

“They arrested someone. Was there another shooting?" Tenisha was the first to speak.

"Shhh! I can't hear. I'm trying to find out now. "

This time Keith reached over to hold Tenisha’s hand. He couldn't believe this was true.

"The small church in the Highland Park neighborhood is located off of Dill Road. The entire community is in mourning."

A slow and slightly evil smile came across Keith's face. “That, my love, is how to get away with murder. We can go home. "
